John Sullivan (1740-1795), lawyer, entrepreneur, soldier, and political leader of New Hampshire during and after the American Revolution. Both a commercial and a military Federalist, who had learned in the Continental Congress and in the American army to loathe everything in state and national government that was “disorganized and diffuse.” A proud, fierce, and pompous man, driven (according to his modern biographer) by “an ambition that soared beyond his abilities”: a desire to be an even greater man than he was.
