The First Presbyterian Eastward in Massachusetts and New Hampshire expressed concern to Washington that America’s new Constitution didn’t mention God. The venerable president replied, “The path of true piety is so plain as to require but little political recognition……And in the progress of morality and knowledge, to which our government will give every furtherance, we may confidently expect the advancement of true religion and the completeness of our happiness.”
