HAMPTON -- Whoever buys Smuttynose Brewing Co. at a foreclosure auction in March could be expected to pay for a wastewater pretreatment system, common among brewing operations but never installed at the brewery’s Towle Farm Road facility.

Hampton town officials said they did not know what the system would cost a buyer that might purchase the company and facility at 105 Towle Farm Road at the March 9 auction. Smuttynose agreed to use a pretreatment system to lower the biochemical oxygen demand, or BOD, in its wastewater before sending it to the town’s wastewater treatment plant when it applied for the facility that opened in 2014.
