It’s not clear if the posts spurred any voters to request absentee ballots who shouldn’t have. Absentee voters must swear in an affidavit that they are unable to come to the polls for a legitimate reason. Lying on the form is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine — a steep risk to take just to get out of driving in a snowstorm. And a contentious proposal to change how the towns split school-district costs may have spurred participation among far-flung voters.
