GRANT LAVIGNE

All the hard work Bedford resident Grant Lavigne has put into his baseball career literally paid off Tuesday night when he signed a professional contract with the Colorado Rockies’ organization.

The Rockies selected Lavigne with a supplemental first-round pick in this year's draft earlier this month. He was chosen 42nd overall.

According to Jim Callis of MLB.com, Lavigne signed for $2 million. The 42nd pick had a slotted value of $1,704,000.

“I am humbled and grateful to officially be a member of the @Rockies,” Lavigne wrote in a Twitter post. “It’s an honor to wear a Rockies’ uniform, and I guarantee my best effort every single day. I’ll be relentless. I am blessed to have the love and support of so many positive people, especially my family.”

According to Kevin Lavigne, Grant’s father, his son will report to the Grand Junction (Colo.) Rockies this morning. Grand Junction is Colorado’s Rookie League affiliate in the Pioneer League.

Lavigne, who had committed to Wake Forest, was a four-year starter at Bedford High School. He collected 103 hits in 88 career games with the Bulldogs, including 22 doubles, seven triples and 16 home runs. He also drove in 95 runs and stole 25 bases.

The Rockies have said they envision Lavigne as a power-hitting first baseman at the professional level. He also played third base and left field for Bedford last season.
